Nursing Practicum Objectives Example
Assignment 1: Practicum Objectives
This course includes a 160-hour practicum, a crucial part of the clinical hours required for the DNP credential. The Practicum Experience provides an opportunity to explore significant issues related to your specialty practice while enhancing your leadership skills as you collaborate with others at your practicum site. To guide you during your practicum, you will need to develop specific objectives.
Preparing for the Practicum
- Review the Practicum Journal Document: Begin considering the learning objectives that will guide your practicum hours and the activities required to meet them.
- Refer to the DNP Essentials and Specialty Competencies: Use these to inform your learning objectives’ development.
- Log Your Hours: Keep a detailed log of your practicum hours using your Meditrek account, which will be reviewed periodically by your instructors.
Assignment Instructions
- Practicum Objectives (1–2 pages): List the practicum objectives you’ve identified. The number may vary based on your experience.
- Describe Key Activities: Outline the activities associated with each objective. You will have an opportunity to revise your objectives after receiving faculty feedback in Week 2.
Formatting Requirements
Ensure that all papers include a title page, introduction, summary, and references, using the formatting provided by the Walden Writing Center.
Understanding Practicum Objectives
Practicum objectives are distinct from practicum goals. While goals provide broad outcomes for the course, practicum objectives focus on specific skills or knowledge you should gain during your practicum. These objectives should connect your intent with the realities of your practicum experience and planned assessments. A good practicum objective, according to Chatterjee and Corral (2017), should clearly outline what a learner will gain and adhere to the SMART criteria: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
Practicum Objectives Example
- Objective 1: Gain knowledge and practical experience in home health nursing by researching policies related to Homecare Nursing by the end of the practicum.
- Key Activities:
- Participate in policy development meetings and training sessions focused on homecare nursing.
- Explore the history and evolution of Homecare Nursing, including Medicaid/Medicare strategies.
- Objective 2: Understand community services that promote patient independence, improve outcomes, and reduce readmissions for home-based care patients.
- Key Activities:
- Research and connect with community-based services that support homecare nursing.
- Refer patients and families to relevant community resources.
- Objective 3: Develop interdisciplinary team collaboration skills and conduct quality assessments with patients and families in the Home Healthcare setting.
- Key Activities:
- Apply newly acquired knowledge during patient and family interactions.
- Improve communication through active listening and situational awareness in clinical settings.
- Objective 4: Network with other Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) to enhance knowledge and improve care outcomes for multimorbid home-based care patients.
- Key Activities:
- Attend at least one conference per month to network with FNPs specializing in home healthcare.
